By linking length and width of leaves to development stages, the size and position of the largest leaf would become an emergent property of the model, rather than an input (function of total leaf number) as is currently the case. The framework would also capture the differences in leaf area profiles between maize and sorghum/millet and the leaf area profiles of photoperiod sensitive sorghum with >25 leaves (which cannot be captured by current approaches). There are lots of data available to develop the concept, juts need to find the time (student) to get this done
How is this moving forward? We have had some issues in simulating maize leaf area, and have also leaf size data to contribute to this.
I think there is value to look at the leaf size approaches for both C3 and C4 cereals.
Model development in APSIM to Simulate C3 and C4 Cereals for Agrivoltaics
I haven't done much on this recently, but I have a lot of data on sorghum, maize, millet. I have a general concept of how to develop something that is generic across these 3 species that would capture the following
@erik-van-oosterom A major publication in maize on this was from Karine https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-3040.2007.01772.x
I also have a LOT of individual leaf size data for maize collected in Mexico years ago at 4 altitudes and 2 seasons of climate - creating very diverse profiles. Could include sugarcane in this as well? It models leaf area by adding leaves up to a maximum length and size when they keep adding...
Scott,
Yes, I am aware of that paper and that would be handy in the development of this approach. And many of the maize data I have are indeed yours from Mexico. They're good quality, but if they would also have had ear leaf position they would have been amazing....helps to make the link to sorghum/millet Extension to sugar cane should be straightforward as that seems quite similar to West African sorghum. Can probably be implemented through link to phenology and stem elongation.

@erik-van-oosterom keep us updated on this. We can contribute maize data from the US. Ear leaf position included.
It is proposed to develop a generic model for canopy leaf area development of C4 cereals that uses response of length and width of individual leaves to leaf position and development stage
