Ratooning routine in PMF #5234

Ratooning in sorghum occurs after harvest (and possibly slashing) of the plant crop. Multiple stems are initiated (similar to tillers) on the existing mature root system if conditions are favourable. In essence this becomes a second crop that can be harvested for fodder and/or grain (similar to ratoon crop in sugar). It would be feasible to add a ratooning option to sorghum to enable simulation of potential for allowing the crop to produce a ratoon rather than be sprayed out/killed at maturity, which is common practice.

This would require an algorithm for initiating the number of tillers and their leaf number & phenology to establish the ratoon canopy. Much of the existing algorithms for growth and development could then be invoked

Data are also available for rice. Ratoon rice has been considered as a new technology to be applied/promoted in some areas of China.

Hi Pete Have built an algorithm to do this many moons ago Happy to help get it on the rails Agree that it does need some initialisation of number of ratoon stems/tillers per plant and removal of juvenile leaves Graeme H
