This is a long-term continuous wheat run on a sand with very low PAWC and in a dry environment. The current sowing rule (a manager example) only sows a crop every few years. The timing of the crash is sensitive to node structure and details of sowing rule (which determines how often/when a crop is [[sown):]

• If I changed the sowing rule to be more appropriate for a sand in Victoria and not require stored soil water, my simulation crashed much sooner on a very dry profile. In addition, if I removed the crop and did a crop-free simulation then it ran all the way!
• A coarser node spacing caused it to crash later – presumably meaning it jumped over the places where finer node spacings crashed.

Above observations suggest that it may be an issue of there not being any water to be moved around - zero change? Although not sure why SWIM would struggle with that? Thicker layers means less chance that there’s no change in SW in a layer?
