I am not so happy about repeating too much information across the repo, makes it also harder to maintain. Woudn't this belong better in the base directory?

After including images we have couples of screens to scroll. What about if we put the crucial information in the main readme and all the details ("large") in separated directotory?

maybe the base dir readme should only contain a brief overview. The details go into doc/ ?
