Multiple rig/soundcards and outboxes #10

I realize this post is vague and incomplete, my purpose is just to get the idea out there discussion and consideration.

In this use case an operator is tasked with relaying local traffic to/from out of area RMS stations. The operator is using two rigs/soundcards simultaneously, one for local (VHF/UNF) and another for out of area (HF) traffic. Each rig/soundcard would probably need its own outbox.

The flow of traffic could look something like this:

Traffic coming back operator would move the message from the inbox and puts it into the local outbox.

It may be useful to introduce the concept of the envelope, much in the same way SMTP works.

This sounds a lot like what a Winlink gateway would do, right? Or am I missing something?

The early part of the EMCOMM P2P Routing internet email addresses without RMS Gateway? thread is another use case of this proposal.

In this initial post the operator wants a way to relay traffic from local VHF/UHF stations to another VHF/UHF station. A few posts later another operator lays out the scenario of this proposal.

My $.02 is manually wrapping and unwrapping messages in transit is at best less than optional and worst error prone.

I took a look at that thread and it seems one option that's discussed is the use of digipeating (potentially through one or more portable gateways). Of course, that doesn't take into account moving the message onto HF from VHF/UHF (well, manually doing so, anyway; RMS Relay could very well do it in an automated fashion once it reached the portable gateway).

Additionally, if you can't deploy a portable gateway to a high enough site in view of both the sender and receiver, all bets are off :)
