Was just expanding a bit upon the final development, when I noticed an oddity while comparing ssp1 and ssp3. According to B Jones and O’Neill the expected population growth is low for SSP1 and high for SSP3. Meanwhile the result I get seem to show that there are a higher population in scenario 1 than 3. Could this difference be explained by the fact, that the urbanization is expected to be faster in scenario 1 than scenario 3? So that there technically are more people in SSP3, but since they are spread out, this does not appear on the map?

Yes, exactly. The urbanization rate is the main driving factor that determine how different the maps look.
