Hello there,

I'm looking for an alternative to Stardock Tiles, because it has many bugs and there seems to be little development. So eventually I found LinkBar, which seems great to me. I can create a linkbar for each of my projects, containing just all the apps and files I need. Very nice! However I see some room for improvement. Please let me drop some suggestions:

  1. Create a right-click menu function to add a shortcut to the active window. If this window contains an opened file, then it is a shortcut to the file. If this window has no file opened, it is a shortcut to the application. For example, if the window is a Microsoft Word document, then a shortcut to this document is added. If the window is an empty instance of Word then a shortcut to winword.exe is added.

  2. Add some extra behavior to normal/left-clicking an application shortcut, so that it resembles the behavior we know from the Windows taskbar. I will explain it using Word (winword.exe) as an example. I suggest three options: a. If no instance of Word is running, clicking the shotcut opens the application. b. If one instance of Word is running, the Word window is either activated or deactivated (minimized). c. If multiple instances are running (mutliple documents opened and/or empty screens), clicking the shortcut shows a menu, the same as the right-click menu but with all the opened documents at the top of the list.

  3. If there is a shortcut to a file that is already open, then clicking the shortcut currently seems to result in LinkBar trying to open the file a second time. This is clear if the link is to a .txt file, which is then opened a second time. If it is to a .docx file, only Word is activated, but with a little delay, probably because Word detects the file is already open and therefore aborts the process to open it a second time. I think this behavior needs improvement.

  4. If there are more LinkBars I would like the have them all listed in the right-click menu and be able to check or uncheck them in order to choose which one(s) are displayed.

  5. One other improvement would be that the shortcut of the active window is marked, for example by a lighter or darker background color.

Okay, excuse me for the length of this list, but it shows my enthusiasm for LinkBar.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this is being developed anymore. I use it all the time too, and even the forks don't provide any significant progress in development. I'll share some alternatives here if I find them (or develop my own).

Hello, I don't plan to add features 1, 2, 3, 5 because Linkbar is a quick launch bar, not a taskbar. I will add feature 4 in the list.

@ATGH15102AFMLD Thanks for your answer. You're right, most of my suggestions were intended to transform LinkBar to a taskbar. That is another concept.
