Potential Use case: Could OSS donations of time / money be tax deductible? #14
This is technically lobbying another group for a slightly different purpose, so I'm not sure it fits with the core ideas of the project, but it came as a suggestion so I wanted to mention it here.
If a lot of .NET devs work in corporate shops and we're trying to convince them to donate time/money to causes that help move the entire industry forward, in the public, for free, then might we be able to raise awareness enough to gain a tax credit for those companies who contribute to such work?
Technically it's awarding companies for doing the right thing, but if it gets the outcome we'd like to see, I think it might be worth it to try.
This might need to be a separate project, though. And there's also the question of how such time would be quantified for the government (vs. the fact that OSS projects can assess for themselves who's contributing -- doing so in a government/regulated atmosphere is a different beast)
Just a reminder that different countries can have wildly variances when it comes to tax exemptions.
OTH if some countries pick it up, it may be easier to gain momentum in others
