Was able to successfully create a group using aliases for the course mate parameter. Despite having duplicated course mates with the same alias, no issues occured and the earliest course mate, test123 could still be added. Would be concerned that this could result in users unwittingly adding wrong course mates to the group by accident.
Recreated by adding 3 different coursemate with a name containing the substring "test" to coursemates and creating a group using "-cm test" as the alias.
