Since deciding for rEFInd as bootloader, I guess I will use an EFI-only live image. Ideally it will still be a hybrid iso that can either be burnt to DVD or dd to USB stick.

There are several things that will have to be fixed during this stage:

make sure that kernel and bootloader are correctly configured (including initramfs)
make sure that init system is working
figuring out how to do an EFI image (vfat) and system image (Ext4?) and put them together in an ISO in the correct way...

... probably more things I have not encountered yet
