Adhoc network on OSX seems restricted #14

We tried setting up an adhoc network on OSX to test several iOS devices in isolation from our common Wifi network with Link today. See https://www.ableton.com/en/help/article/link-setup-live/.

It looks like only up to four devices will be linked with each other and then the next group of four devices again only with each other. E.g. four iPads will be in "Link 1" and then four iPhones will be in "Link 2", in order of connecting to the network.

Is that a known issue with OSX adhoc networks?

Hey @markusthegeek,

we investigated this issue today by creating an ad-hoc network in our office. We were able to connect 11 devices with each other through an ad-hoc network (before we ran out of devices) - so there does not seem to be a limitation.

However, we have noticed some unexpected behaviour on OS X where one would need to re-connect to an ad-hoc network twice in order for the devices to discover each other. This seems to be an issue on the OS level as I have sniffed the packets transferred and none of the general Link traffic made it to the network port.

Hi @mfk-ableton,

Interesting! We tested again on several Macs today and indeed what worked is to use Internet Sharing in System Settings / Sharing. What did not work is clicking on the Wifi icon and select Create Network.

Problem is that this network will go away when there is no longer an Internet connection on the Mac. Maybe there is a need for a dedicated link hub hardware for on stage ;-)

Can you update the link for OSX in the following page, it is currently broken. So users might find either solution when googling.

Hey @markusthegeek ,

when I was testing with ad-hoc on Mac, what I had to do after several devices were in a session, was click on the WiFi-Icon again and there I noticed that a second 'ad-hoc' network with the same name showed up which I then could join. We had iOS devices in the mix too while we were testing, I'll give it another shot with just Macs.

Thanks for the report! I'll pass this along.

Hi @mfk-ableton,

sorry for the confusion, we were using iOS devices for Link and different Macbooks, one at a time, as the adhoc network source. We were not running any Link apps on OSX for this test.

Hey markus,

interesting. I just gave it another shot following your description and it worked fine. I suppose you experienced the same issue as I did with my mac, causing two identical ad-hoc networks to co-exist. Just to clarify, which OS X version did you use? I've verified it on 10.11.2. Apple has done a lot of changes in Ad-Hoc networking over the years (most notably taking away encryption entirely).

Hi Matthias,

thanks for following up on this. one OS X version is 10.10.5 and the other one should be 10.11.x as well. One of the testers if out this week.
