I'm familiar with BEAR, but could you provide a brief overview of the other two manuscripts with respect to the automation levels? (i.e., emoji classification).

All three of these use the BEAR system and are full self driving. The 2020 paper is the original BEAR paper. The 2021 paper uses the same BEAR system, but introduces Finite element analysis into the machine learning framework. The 2023 paper uses data from a new campaign run on the BEAR to demonstrate strategies for running SDLs.

For all three papers, the BEAR was run fully autonomously. It selected experiments, fabricated the parts, tested the parts, and analyzed the results without human intervention. Researchers did guide set the goals of the SDL and would perform maintenance and resupply as necessary.
