NOMAD Oasis is awesome because is free and open source, but also for these many reasons:

  1. Local Data Management: It allows the creation of a local version of NOMAD, tailored to specific data-management needs and individual policies. This ensures data privacy and security, as it runs behind the user's firewall and inside their VPN.

  2. Ease of Installation and Scalability: NOMAD Oasis is easy to install on any computer with Docker and offers unlimited scalability on Kubernetes clusters. This flexibility makes it suitable for various sizes of research groups and institutions.

  3. Integration Capabilities: Users can integrate all types of data, support their own file formats, include data from existing Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs), and add custom normalization steps. This comprehensive integration capability enhances the versatility of the platform.

  4. Customization and Extension: It allows for the extension and customization of NOMAD's schema to create specialized editors for documenting work and data. Users can also add their own tools and Jupyter notebooks that directly access and manipulate data in NOMAD.

  5. Privacy and Unrestricted Storage: With NOMAD Oasis, users have complete control over their data, implementing their own data policies, managing data without necessarily publishing it, and using existing user management systems. The platform also supports the use of existing storage solutions, enabling the management of large volumes of data.

  6. Publication of Selected Data: NOMAD Oasis will soon enable users to publish selected data to the public NOMAD service with a single click, facilitating data sharing and collaboration within the scientific community.

  7. Custom Needs Fulfillment: Beyond the features of the public NOMAD service, Oasis can be customized to meet specific processing requirements, support unique file formats, and integrate with existing laboratory systems.

  8. Developed by FAIRmat: As a product developed by the FAIRmat consortium, NOMAD Oasis is part of an initiative to revolutionize research data management by embracing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles.

  9. Suitable for Various Group Sizes: Whether for small research groups or large institutes, NOMAD Oasis is adaptable, with hardware requirements that scale according to data and tool usage needs.

  10. Backup and Data Organization: All data in NOMAD Oasis is organized in a conventional file system, which can be easily integrated into existing storage and backup solutions. This feature simplifies data management and ensures data integrity.

These features collectively make NOMAD Oasis an advanced, flexible, and user-friendly platform for managing and processing materials science data, fostering efficient research and collaboration in the field.

I agree that NOMAD OASIS is awesome :) Thank you for the contribution! It looks like integrations with external ELNs are in the works (either beta releases or future plans). I'm also seeing "Using NOMAD as an Electronic lab notebook". I think I will add a link to this playlist. Any suggestions on a better organization of the information management section in the README to accommodate solutions like NOMAD OASIS?

For now, accepting the PR with a link to the youtube playlist added.

I think that tutorial is becoming already a bit old and very beginner, but still valuable. There will be a new version of it coming later this year. I think it might be interesting this talk from Daniel Baumann (KIT), where he uses a NOMAD Oasis to log all his perovskite coatings with a spin bot (solar cells application).

This tutorial on February 14th shall be very valuable as an introduction to NOMAD Oasis and easy to follow with a jupyter notebook.

Regarding your other questions, I think Research Data Management or Research Data Management Software is a more descriptive category than Information Management. You can add an ELN subcategory there if needed.

Also, this ELN finder from TU Darmstadt might be an interesting resource: https://eln-finder.ulb.tu-darmstadt.de/home
