I though that this was a really fun experiment. It was easy to complete too. My only complaint is that there were a couple of clips (especially at the beginning) that sounded as if they had been cut short. In fact, I could here barely anything at all, kind of like a grunting sound. There was also a clip part way too that was pretty fuzzy
I really like the concept of spy , but they should have a count of how many sentences we do because I had to do it 2 times . I wasn't sure if I had done 120 sentences, so I did it a second time. But I think its great .
I attempted it again today and it ended up working for me! I did not use Chrome, just safari! Was all that I needed to gain the two extra points was to complete it and fill in the bottom survey?
I was having problems with the "Russia" game. I reported the problems -the page would freeze when i clicked on NEXT. I thought I'd try another language, so I chose South Africa, it turns out that this game did not freeze until much later. Once again after clicking the NEXT button nothing else worked, not even the other tabs I had open on google chrome.
Aside from the technical issues, the game seemed pretty straight forward and simple. The instructions at the beginning were clear, however I suggest to notify the subjects that they need to press GET OFF THE BUS when the game is done!
I also suggest other variety of sentences, if this is possible- I'm not sure if there is perhaps a reason for why the sentences repeat. I suggest this because it is not a short experiment, and it begins to get boring after hearing the same sentences.
This is a brief report on the experiment I have finished conducting for extra credit in your LING 351 class. I completed the 10 blocks of the experiment on Sussex England. I realized that most of the time it was the same man speaking with an English accent. It was quite easy to figure out who was from England, and who really tried hard to give in to the accent. I would suggest more of a variety of languages, because none of the 3 languages (to select) I was familiar with. Over all, it was a fair experiment, quick and easy to understand the tasks.
I wasn't able even able to start playng the spy game, whenever I would choose a "place I grew up", it would give me an "error on the page" message. I pressed all three places (Russia, Sussex England, and South Africa).
I thought this experiment was fun. It was very simple and the instructions were easy to follow. However sometimes the sentences being read were a little too low to hear or were very loud. Also, it was much harder to figure out what the accent was when the sentences were shorter. I found myself wanting a repeat button, which I'm sure would defeat the purpose of the experiment. My only suggestion would be to, if possible, even out the volume of the sentences being spoken.
I tried doing the experiment but nothing worked.
I tried the Russian game out, but there was no sound. I am playing the game on Windows and in firefox. I tried the soudn check and there was no sound....Have a nice evening.
I did the Russian Spy part of the study. I liked the format, and it was very easy to use. I think it would be useful to specify how many buses need to be listened to. Maybe the number on the side of the bus could represent the number of buses have been listened to? Also, after a while, I remembered the sound of some of the voices, and was able to deduce their accent after several attempts. But maybe that is all part of the study.
I liked the concept for this game. It's a good way to get people to get people to identify accents without actually tipping them off as to the nature of the study. It's very quick and simple to use. At first I wasn't sure if it was part of the study or not to have the participants only be able to listen to each sentence once, so I was a bit disappointed not to be able to go back and replay the file. Maybe it would be a good idea to give the participant a heads up that they can only listen to each sentence once. Another thing I noticed when I participated in the Russian accent game was that there seemed to be a lot of Russian accent files per block. Maybe I got better at identifying them because I played the game so many times. But maybe adding in more files of non-Russian accents would a good idea.
Finally, one large problem I had was that the game kept freezing one me (I sent a report about this). I had to keep closing the page and coming back to it and now I'm not sure how many times I've actually listened to the files. Sometimes it would work for one or two blocks before it would freeze, but this was not always the case and sometimes it would freeze in the middle of game.
First, let me say that it is one of the easiest survey I had to do so far, the task is easily understood and how to answer too. One thing that I really like is that you can stop at any time by clicking exit the bus. On the 100 or so sentences I have listened to, one was empty, i.e. I couldn't hear anything at all. Also, the sound test, in my case, didn't work at all, for I couldn't hear anything. One last thing is that at the end, when we are finished with the test, it would've been nice to know how many sentences we have listened to, for I knew that after 12 sentences we had a 'checkpoint', but after a while I lost count. Overall, it was a very interesting, easy, straight-forward, fun survey and definitely very professional.
Lack of instructions on initial page makes it somewhat confusing; I had to go back to the email to clarify which option I could chose.
After 3d sentence, browser gave me a message saying the website has become unresponsive, I had to reopen the website and restart the experiment.
Recordings not very clear, phonetically and acoustically, some are not clearly pronounced, some have noise.
The evaluation (progress between between blocks is not very clear. I think it needs to be more simple, without percentages, maybe just number of correct answers and number of wrong answers.
There was no accent initially to compare with. For someone that has not heard one of the accents before, this task would be very difficult.
Nothing in the background during the experiment changes; that became somewhat monotonous for me!!! It also appears like all the passengers on the bus are spies!! It is only during my 3d trial of the experiment that I noticed how the passenger in light blue is changing positions after each response.
It could be interesting to have a progress bar or maybe a map of where the bus needs to arrive so we know how far into the route we are, as in how much of the 10 blocks of the experiments we have completed.
There is no repeat button, sometimes I lost focus, and I didn’t hear the utterance correctly. Maybe allow 1 repetition.
On my second try, I think I might have done 70 sentences, and then the website froze. When I tried to refresh, it told me that information I have entered might be lost when doing so. I chose to press continue to see what happens, the page did not refresh, it stayed frozen. Maybe program the experiment in way where the responses are automatically saved, and once you chose to go back, you can pick up where you left off.
I thought the scale, and the notion of hot and cold to be very interesting. It is helpful when sometimes I had a doubt or a slight inclination towards whether it was an accent or not. It is good that the answers are not either this or that.
The instructions in the “About” part are very clear. The experiment in itself is fun and more of a game than a task.
Hello,
I tried to use firefox again, but the sound still doesn't work.
For the experiment "Spy or Not?", some comments/suggestions I have to make are the following;
-The button for the first time you hit "play" to hear a passenger in each ride should not be called "next"; -The result page sometime switches too quick to the next ride for us to see how many we had good/wrong; -Some (but not many) passengers have a recording that is off (like reading the instructions) or do not talk; -If it is possible without changing the result of the experiment, it would be nice for the sentences said by the passenger to vary a little bit more.
I just completed the South African Spy or Not game.
The omission of a repeat button was interesting. Hearing repetitions would have allowed me to judge accents with much more certainty, but I enjoyed having to listen and pay attention knowing there would only be one production of each sentence.
Something else I noticed was one young(?) male's voice that was particularly ubiquitous. He did a lot of recordings and a lot of his sentences were consecutive. After making positive South African accent judgements for that individual after the first set and seeing the positive feedback, I was a lot more confident assigning him as being definitely South African (rightmost notch on the sliding scale). I was able to recognize his voice early into each recording that he did. It would be interesting and more challenging to see more variance in the participants.
I tried to make a mental note of the IPA transcription for vowels in "bait", "bet", and "boy" in accents I judged as being South African which I think helped a little bit the more I proceeded. I wasn't totally familiar with how South African accents sound going into the experiment, so it was interesting and nice to hear some.
Overall I thought it was really fun and interesting. I liked the set-up and formatting of the experiment, especially the hot-cold sliding scale. I'm just about to do the other couple of experiments for fun.
I tried to do the activity for LING 372. However, the website does not make any sound for me in Internet Explorer or Firefox. I submitted bug reports for both browsers, and I will try to find some time to try again next week. The one comment I did have was in Firefox, I had a popup that said "This website is asking to store data on your computer for offline use". I clicked "Allow," but that made me a bit nervous.
The game was interesting. At first, it was hard to figure out who was a Russian native speaker and who wasn't. After doing it several times, I could start to recognize the voices and thus knew by the voice who I though was a native speaker without having to think twice.
I found seem sentences to be very low and others to be very high in volume.
Overall, I enjoyed taking part of this experiment.
