A hex grid with an extra bit so it's elongated forms the encounters, Can choose different shapes/sizes
When exploring roll die and go to random adjacent hex grid.
Can navigate to any previously visited hex grid.
The ghastly mutated may also move around hex which sets up encounters.
This allows players to know where to explore, and gives a bit more guidance.
If exploration is prepared or unprepared exploration goes well/ bad so two options when landing on a random hex.
The hex map doesn't necessarily represent directions more what is nearby each thing. This could be changed to a point map or grid map if so choose.
Remove the whole stanza design thing it doesn't fit wiht the game any more
