I have the same issue with 6.1.1 on a Pixel 7 with Android 13. Since the latest version this error occurs after several minutes and you have to deactivate and activate the VPN again for it to be working.
I observed this behavior now for a couple of days already. I activated extended debugging logs but don't know how to access them. Or are they already sent to sentry?
I have the same problem
Found a fix, try disabling the private DNS in settings of the phone
I didn't have it activated and still face the problem.

Try restarting the phone
I tried restarting the phone and today, the app silently exited again without any notice.
After the silent exit, the app is in a strange state: VPN connection is inactive, but the app shows the pause button, thinking it's active. I have to "pause" the connection and then start the VPN again in order to establish the VPN again . It feels like the app does not observe the VPN state correctly.
I would love to provide more details but don't know how. Any idea what to provide as additional information, @GKid94 ?

Try disabling the battery optimization
Battery optimization is off, today the VPN quit again.

Then it's a phone system problem
Also turn this on
I have this on, too. I have a Pixel 7 with stock Android, all updates. I'm wondering which system would be better suited

Exactly the same issue here, running Android 10 on Sony xz2 compact.
So this seems to be helping.. I haven't lost VPN yet since unrestricting.
I have this issue but it presents itself differently. I'm in VPN mode and on my phone and this issue IS specific to this phone/rom ( Poco F3 on official MIUI Global 14.0.9 ). It doesn't seem to happen with any other phone I used or use. With my phone ( Poco F3 ) in a specific network Adaway's VPN gets turned off after a few minutes. Only on my company's free wifi I get this issue. With another phone ( Samsung A14 ) works flawlessly. In any other network on this phone ( Poco F3 ) I don't have issues. So I am confident that it is something with this combination of phone/ROM but what I can't seem to figure it out.
Edit: I have everything setup correctly ( battery mode/optimization/app locked/etc. ).

Same here. Asus Zenfone 10, Android 13, all optimizations off. Using the quick connect tile does not change the app's state when frozen, I have to manually open the app to restore its functionality. I've been using AdAway since September and it only started acting out like this around December. I don't think it's related to battery optimization at all. For the past week it's been doing this while using the phone, even a few minutes after restarting the app.
Is there an existing issue for this?

It can be my low memory phone just disables the task, (changing settings in phone right now) I have set this adaway-VPN tobe always connected mode. Let's see for a week.
Still I will comment that my low memory phone is just killing the process, how to solve this issue? I did remove from battery saver, let it to go background. Still checking and changing settings to perform.
