Code injection happens when an application insecurely accepts input that is subsequently used in a dynamic code evaluation call. If insufficient validation or sanitisation is performed on the input, specially crafted inputs may be able to alter the syntax of the evaluated code and thus alter execution. In a worst case scenario, an attacker could run arbitrary code in the server context and thus perform almost any action on the application server.
Use of vulnerable components will introduce weaknesses into the application. Components with published vulnerabilities will allow easy exploitation as resources will often be available to automate the process.

### Vulnerability DetailsA vulnerability in the package_index module of pypa/setuptools versions up to 69.1.1 allows for remote code execution via its download functions. These functions, which are used to download packages from URLs provided by users or retrieved from package index servers, are susceptible to code injection. If these functions are exposed to user-controlled inputs, such as package URLs, they can execute arbitrary commands on the system. The issue is fixed in version 70.0.
