Download symbol not showing on AIOS/saving options impossible, & FF behaving strangely #123

Open Electrosmog opened 8 years ago

Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right place to let you know about problems, so:

  1. My AIOS won't show me the download icon anywhere. I can only see the bookmarks, history, addon, website&browser info (sun icon) and the other info icon (the 'i'). I know there's an option to show or not show the download icon in the sidebar panel. The problem is: I can't save the changes because clicking "OK" and "Apply" won't do anything. The buttons just don't work. I can cancel or switch to advanced mode though.
  2. My Firefox seemed to be confused in some way. I haven't changed any addons for a while, everything worked perfectly, but for some strange reason AIOS is behaving strange (it opens and closes the web console addon and/or the firebug addon; both for the same purpose). This just happens when using AIOS.

Please let me know if you need more info.

Thx in advance.

Before reading further, please see the following bug response and make sure you have at least disabled 'Enable Sidebar Collapsing'. That, and the rest of that post, might save you a bit of time later.

SideBar not opening on firefox · Issue #121 · AddonLab/AiOS

https://github.com/AddonLab/AiOS/issues/121#issuecomment-241232968

My AIOS won't show me the download icon anywhere. I can only see the bookmarks, history, addon, website&browser info (sun icon) and the other info icon (the 'i'). I know there's an option to show or not show the download icon in the sidebar panel. The problem is: I can't save the changes because clicking "OK" and "Apply" won't do anything. The buttons just don't work. I can cancel or switch to advanced mode though.

I don't believe AiOS has that Option. It does have an option to display the download panel in the sidebar (or not, in which case it would be displayed in a new window or a new tab, but that option is ignored in AiOS 0.7.29).

(a) Try right-clicking on a toolbar/menubar and, in the resulting menu, select 'Customize'. See if you can find the 'Downloads' button on the resulting 'Customize Palette'. If so, drag and drop it into place among the other AiOS buttons above the palette.
Click the 'Exit Customize' button.

(b) If that didn't work, you may be having trouble with at least one other extension or theme. First suspect is anything which is designed to affects downloads - but it could be something with no obvious connection). Are all your add-ons up-to-date? Try loading Firefox using the default theme (appearance) and all extensions disabled, except for AiOS .

The problem is: I can't save the changes because clicking "OK" and "Apply" won't do anything. The buttons just don't work.

Whereas the 'Apply' and 'OK' buttons do not change their appearance when you click on them (that bug has already been reported), they do have an effect. So, after completing any change in the AiOS Options, always click 'Apply', then 'OK' and then close the Options window using the 'cross' button in the top right-hand corner of the window. It is a good idea to reload Firefox after all that.

My Firefox seemed to be confused in some way. I haven't changed any addons for a while, everything worked perfectly, but for some strange reason AIOS is behaving strange (it opens and closes the web console addon and/or the firebug addon; both for the same purpose).

Do you mean that your extensions have not been updated recently? Normally, they should be kept up-to-date.

What button are you using? Web console has (is just) its own button.

What makes you believe AiOS is causing what you see?

This just happens when using AIOS.

If the button(s) you are using is/are on the AiOS sidebar, how can you use it/them when you are not using AiOS?

Could it be web console and/or firebug causing the problem?

Please let me know if you need more info.

To save any responder the trouble of asking, you should always at least state your version of Firefox (eg 48.0.1 x64), your operating system (eg Windows 7 x64) and your version of AiOS (eg 0.7.29)

@Electrosmog

Further to my previous post.

The problem is: I can't save the changes because clicking "OK" and "Apply" won't do anything. The buttons just don't work.

I can confirm that this part of your problem is fixed for me by updating to AiOS 0.7.30

(FF 48.0.1 x64 in Win 10 (Aniv) x64.)

As far as your other problems are concerned, please post here as soon as you have further information.

Electrosmog commented 8 years ago

Hi RDL,

updating to 0.7.30 solved the problem with the "OK" and "Apply" button. That works fine now. :)

Before reading further, please see the following bug response and make sure you have at least disabled 'Enable Sidebar Collapsing'. That, and the rest of that post, might save you a bit of time later.

I always have this disabled. :)

Solved. Thx. No theme used btw. Obviously something went wrong when customizing and I killed the download icon by accident. Not it's back on its place.

Okay, sorry, maybe I wrote some confusing stuff yesterday. I didn't mean "changing" addons. I auto-update them all. I meant that I didn't install any new addons for months.

I just was trying to reproduce that behavior (that strange random opening/closing of the web console as well as Firebug), and as I am almost sure it only happens when AiOS and one of those plugins (or both) are enabled at the same time. And mostly when I type something. Strange, huh? And yeah, I tried disabling all plugins. I even did reset my browser. I even uninstalled it and cleaned my Windows 7 from FF (and disabling Sync), but as soon as AiOS and one or both of those developer addons are installed my FF goes nuts :D

And okay, sorry for not giving you my config. It's FF 48.0.1 x32 on Win7 x64, and the AiOS version was 0.7.29 and is now 0.7.30.

I'll let you know if this problem persists.

And also sorry for being a bit insecure being on github. Never did anyting before around here. I'l get the groove, I think.

@Electrosmog

Thank you very much for your latest information. So far your score is 1.5 problems fixed and 1.0 to go. Congratulations :D

I'm still confused by your remaining problem.

..AIOS.. ..opens and closes the web console addon and/or the firebug addon; both for the same purpose. This just happens when using AIOS.

I don't think AiOS itself has any facility to open either the Firefox web console or activate firebug.

I understand that 'web console' simply provides a button (a) which opens the built-in Firefox web console. The web console itself, and all its functions, are part of Firefox and always present, regardless of whether that button extension is installed or not.

However, I just tried installing the 'Web Console' extension and neither of its buttons actually do anything at all for me. The last review on AMO says it wasn't working in Aug 2014. No updates since 2012. Perhaps you're not actually using the button, so could uninstall that extension? - or are you now using 'Toggle Console' instead?

I also see that firebug provides its own toolbar button (b).

Finally, AiOS provides an 'Error Console' button (c).

Q1) Are you using one of those buttons when you see the problem?

If so, which one?

Q2) or are you using a pre-defined keyboard shortcut?

If so, what key combination?

Since 'web console' is just a button to activate the built-in FF feature, it does not appear to change any keyboard shortcuts.

Firebug seems to use a lot of shortcuts

Keyboard and Mouse Shortcuts - FirebugWiki http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/Keyboard_and_Mouse_Shortcuts

AiOS also uses some by default (see its Options), although I do not see one for the 'Error Console' function.

Any chance that the trouble arises out of clashing keyboard shortcuts?

I do not see any trouble with Firebug and AiOS installed at the same time. The Firebug shortcut works and so does the Firefox web console shortcut. However, other than seeing the difference between the two displays, I know nothing about Firebug.

Hey RDL,

I checked the thing with the shortcuts and there were no interfering ones with Firebug. But even when uninstalling Firebug, the built-in console kept opening/closing/opening/etc.

BUT: after FF auto-updated to 48.0.2 the problem is completely gone and everything works fine again.

Obviously my combination of addons plus the Firefox versions 48.0 and 48.0.1 confused my FF in some way.

Thanks for your help!

@Electrosmog

everything works fine again.

Good.

I still don't actually know what you were doing and exactly what you saw.

When you report a problem it is often a good idea to describe it as if you were telling the reader exactly what to do, step by step, so they could be you and also see it happen - and then you need to tell them exactly what you expected to see happening and exactly what you really did see.

Electrosmog commented 8 years ago

Well... maybe my way of describing it was too complicated. What happened when starting the browser - and especially when typing stuff into the address field - was like if you kept pressing Ctrl+Alt+Q all the time (open console, close console, open console and so on) but this happened (i think, but as I said, I'm not absolutely sure) ONLY when AiOS was enabled, too. This was really odd. It stopped as soon as I disabled AiOS (what I can definitely say). And if Firebug was enabled, it was Firebug which did the opening and closing instead of the Web Console. For whatever reason. I couldn't really reproduce all that because it didn't always happen. It happened randomly. Mostly it did happen, sometimes it didn't. That made it even harder to locate the problem. Sorry for that.

Anyway, I can use everything simultaneously again since the 48.0.2 FF Update.

RDL-github commented 8 years ago

@Electrosmog

Ah! Thank you. Now I have a picture of what was happening. Ctrl+Alt+Q doesn't actually do anything for me anyway but I understand what you say. Very strange.

Glad it went away, although it would be good to understand why it was happening.

Regards

RDL.
