Bing has recently begun inserting ads at the top and bottom of my search results.

This happens for most things I search for, but I have uploaded a screenshot which shows the ads at the top section of a search for mobile phone plans

Hi. Cannot reproduce. Could you please show HTML code of the banner or/and upload saved page?

jputting commented 2 years ago

Hi,

How do I show the HTML code of the banner or/and upload saved page?

I have also raised this on the Brave Forums fanboynz a well known and respected Filter List creator and others posters on the Brave forums can reproduce these Bing Search Result Ads with ease.

I have thoroughly uninstalled Brave and reinstalled it and left it in its default configuration with ZERO extensions/add-ons and those Bing Ads are back.

The same thing happens when using Firefox, Safari or Brave in their virginal default configuration.

I have tried using various adblockers to defeat those “Ads” in Bing Search Results.

To my surprise when I used the Adblock Plus Extension for Chrome the Bing Search Results “Ads” vanished.

I made sure that allow “Acceptable Ads” was disabled.

I looked at the Filter Lists enabled by default and found in the Advanced Settings that only 2 Filter Lists were used:

EasyList Filter List

ABP Filter list

I had previously tried Easylist combined with Adguard’s Base Filter in Adguard and uBlock Origin with NO SUCCESS.

So I then tried subscribing to the ABP Filter List via adding it as a Custom Filter List to Adguard and was once again succesful at banishing those Brave Search Results ads with Adguard.

I tried adding the ABP Filter List to uBlock Origin as a Custom Filter List , however I believe that the ABP Filter format is not compatible with uBlock Origin because when I looked at the uBlock Origin Dashboard the ABP Filter count showed 0 rules out of 0 used.

Bing Search Result “Ads” returned when using uBlock Origin alone.

I also tried subscribing to the ABP Filter List as in Brave’s Adblocker by using the “Add filter list via URL” and once again the Bing Search Results “Ads” returned.

I can only get rid of those Bing Search Result “Ads” using ABP Filter List installed in Adguard or Adblock Plus.

When I use the Adguard Filtering Log there are only 2 ABP filters which are blocking anything, those filters are:

bing.com#?#li[class=“b_algo”]:-abp-has(> h2 + div[class=“b_caption”] > p[class])

bing.com#?##b_results > li:has(> h2 + .b_caption > div.b_attribution:not([u]) + p[class])

NO OTHER FILTERS belonging to the ABP Filter List is shown in the Blocked Log.

There is obviously a problem with the formatting/syntax of the ABP Filter List and the 2 Filter Rules which are prevents them working in uBlock Origin and Brave’s Adblocker.

Can you possibly reformat those 2 Filter Rules so that they will work in either uBlock Origin or Brave's Adblocker.

@jputting Hi. Checked in Brave again - still no ads image

I disabled one exclusion https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardFilters/blob/8bcc48968cb5ee80a973d2f946347f1ee7cb2dcd/EnglishFilter/sections/whitelist.txt#L1855 Please check after filters update.

Hi,

I have waited overnight for a update to the Adguard Base Filter+Easy List Filter List.

So far I am still getting those Bing Search Results Ads.

The only thing which has defeated them is the ABP Anti-Circumvention Filter List.

The first screenshot shows Bing Search Results for "mobile phones plans" with Adguard + Easy List Filter List active. You can clearly see the ads at the top of my search results, more appear at the bottom of the list

Screen Shot 2022-03-15 at 2 35 42 pm

The second screenshot show Bing Search Results with the addition of the ABP Anti-Circumvention Filter List alone and NO OTHER FILTER LISTS

Screen Shot 2022-03-15 at 2 41 08 pm

.

You can very clearly see that the Bing Search Results Ads are 100% completely gone.

I then opened Adguard's Filter Log there were only 2 filters from the ABP Anti-Circumvention Filter List blocking anything.

Those 2 filters are: bing.com#?#li[class=“b_algo”]:-abp-has(> h2 + div[class=“b_caption”] > p[class])

bing.com#?##b_results > li:has(> h2 + .b_caption > div.b_attribution:not([u]) + p[class])

I would prefer to keep my Filter Lists to a bare minimum as too many can have detrimental effects.

I do not know why you can not reproduce those ads, but I only started getting them in the past week, I have also ensured that "Allow search ads and the self-promotion of websites" is disabled.

I will be allow more time for the Filter Lists to be updated and see if your deletion of 1 exclusion has fixed this problem.

Hi,

I waited for well over 36 hours and checked for updates to the Filter Lists.

Unfortunately those Bing Search Results Ads are still there.

Alex-302 commented 2 years ago

Is it possible to check remotelly?

jputting commented 2 years ago

How do I check remotely?

If you mean that I should do manual check for updates via the Adguard Settings, that is something I have done several times.

I have also checked that I have the very latest version of Adguard: AdGuard Browser Extension Version 4.0.133

jputting commented 2 years ago

Hi,

It is now well over 2 days and nothing has changed, still getting Bing Search Results Ads.

I have checked for updates to the Filter Lists multiple times.

I have ensured that I have the latest version of Adguard: 4.0.133

I can only assume that removing that removing the White List Exception Filter Rule: bing.com#@#.b_ad has NOT FIXED this issue.

Alex-302 commented 2 years ago

How do I check remotely?

jputting commented 2 years ago

Hi,

I can not use Telegram as it requires that you use a mobile phone number to login with.

I do not have a mobile phone.

Alex-302 commented 2 years ago

In other case I cannot read the message immediately.

jputting commented 2 years ago

I can not send you any message via Telegram because I can not create a Telegram account.

You are required to have a mobile phone number so Telegram can send you a text message for the verification of an account created.

As it is not possible for me to send you a message you via Telegram, please suggest some other way to contact you for the purpose of Remote Checking via AnyDesk.
