@trymion Please clarify - is the problem only with the broken image? Is the video working properly?

Alex-302 commented 1 month ago

I don't know how to reproduce it - started to watch https://pluto.tv/us/on-demand/movies/629ff609cb032400134d42bc

Could you please right click in that image => Inspect and show screenshot of HTML?

trymion commented 1 month ago

Hi Alex-302. sorry for the late reply. the video stops working when that "broken image" comes up. i feel like it's trying to load an ad but it can't and so just stops working altogether. i have to refresh to get it to work - for a few minutes before it happens, or turn off DNS filtering off to get it to work without issues.

with your link, i've not tested the "ondemand" part of the website. all of this has been when watching anything on the "live tv" portion.

here's the screenshot you're asking for -- hopefully the correct one.

as an update, i just tried "reset settings to default" just to eliminate that there was some errant setting screwing things up and beacuse you were saying you couldn't reproduce it. so i started thinking maybe adguard needed a reset.

unfortunately, i still get the same issue if DNS filter is on or adguard is enabled for Pluto.TV. I have to disable DNS filtering and exclude pluto.tv from filtering before it works properly on my system.

Alex-302 commented 1 month ago

@trymion I reproduced this problem now. Maybe they did not try to show me ads 🤷🏻‍♂️ It seems it is caused by a regular filters, not by DNS. Will be fixed today (Friday).

i just wanted to update on this -- it still seems like i'm having issues with it. i've reset adguard back to defaults and without touching anything else, it still errors out the same way as above. there is a difference, though -- it seems to take longer for it to happen whereas before it was within a couple of minutes on their LiveTV area. Sometimes i'll get an advertisement, and sometimes it seems to just error out like above (there was an error, etc., etc.).

edit: i've noticed that it seems to error out when this domain is trying to be called. i'm going to try unblocking it and seeing if it still happens. plutotv_filtering-log

edit2: still happens. but it does seem to be connected somehow. as soon as these "datadog" entries appeared on the filtering log, my pluto.tv tab errored out with the visuals as seen above. i see it says stuff about "nordvpn" and i have a chrome extension installed but it is not in use during these tests. plutotv_filtering-log2

edit3: the only thing that solved this for me again is turning off DNS filtering. as long as i keep that off, everything works as it should.

so, i thought i'd try something different. i completely disabled Adguard on my devices. 2 phones (Adguard for Android), 1 laptop (Adguard for WIndows), 1 desktop (Adguard for Windows).

i set the DNS to AdguardDNS through my router, so all my devices are using AdguardDNS.

I went to Pluto.TV on all of them. Using the same channel (in this case, CSI:New York) so that they're all served ads at the exact same time.

After about 10-15 minutes, they all errored out at the same time with the same errors as my original post. The website says there's an error and the video stops playing.

I'm still convinced that there's something at the DNSblocking level that's breaking Pluto.TV

Alex-302 commented 3 weeks ago

Thanks for the info, will check with DNS. But do you see any difference after July 17 and before?

trymion commented 3 weeks ago

Thanks for the info, will check with DNS. But do you see any difference after July 17 and before?

unfortunately not. even when i reset adguard to defaults (settings and advanced settings, if i ever chanegd anything in there) and go straight to Pluto.TV, it still errors out on my end. i have to disable DNS filtering in order to get it to work. i just triple checked again (reset to defaults, enable HTTPS filtering, load pluto.tv and wait a while) and it error out.

my only doubt is that i can't find anyone else with this issue yet somehow I can reproduce it on every device i have.

Alex-302 commented 3 weeks ago

What about the case with regular filters, but without DNS filtering?

trymion commented 3 weeks ago

Oh -- everything works perfectly without DNS filtering, out of the box now. I believe i had to whitelist Pluto.TV and disable DNS filtering prior to this update in order for it to work, but now I only need to turn DNS filtering off.
