Wi-Fi exceptions for AdGuard for Mac #901

Open martinspaniol opened 3 years ago

martinspaniol commented 3 years ago

In AdguardForiOS we can use Wi-Fi exceptions to only enable DNS protection if you are not connected to specific Wi-Fi networks. This is very useful if you're in your home network and have other centralized methods of DNS filtering, like AdGuardHome.

Is it possible to have this feature also in AdguardForMac?

Expected behavior

Same functionality as in AdguardForiOS.

Actual behavior

No possibility to differentiate between home network and other networks. Thus DNS filtering on your client is always active.

Hello there!

Just curious as to what purpose you want to use this feature?

martinspaniol commented 3 years ago

Hi there,

actually I'm using a Macbook, so a portable device. Sometimes I'm at home where I have AdGuardHome managing all my devices in my local network and sometimes I'm on the go with my Macbook. So it would be nice if AdguardForMac would recognise my home network as an exception where it should not apply DNS filtering as AdGuardHome is already doing a great job. If I'm not connected to my home network it should automatically apply DNS filtering again to protect me.

@Chinaski1 i upvode in my case my router do Dns Over Https (Dream machine with nextdns cli), so I want to be able to use the cache from my router when home, and when outside the app take charge of the dns so this feature is a must have on laptop.

+1 for this feature. I have AdGuard Home running on my home network, so I want AdGuard Mac to disable itself when connected to my home Wi-Fi network.

+1 from me too. I'd love the have this feature. As other have said, if you are using a MacBook (e.g. portable device) it allows you to bypass DNS filtering for you home network, where AdGuard Home kicks in!

This feature works flawlessly on AdGuard for iOS.

+1 Needed feature for MacOS app for home networks where using AdGuard home and needed to resolve local hosts, and when on corporate networks you may need to use their DNS servers to access local resources using DNS.

+1 As above, would be great to have Wi-Fi exceptions, like on iOS, so when I am connected to my home network I can add it too the list so it will use AdGuard Home running on my NAS.

+1 also. At home AGH is cleaning up my DNS traffic.

Hi there, any updates on this feature ?

My use case is that I have a Synology nas and I installed Adguard Home via Docker as my DNS provider for home network and also DoH provider when outside of home. I have a Macbook Air and I would love to be able to whitelist my home wifi and filter other networks when outside, as resolution and filtering is already done by the Adguard Home when at home.

I'll bookmark this :)

@enr00ted Hello!

There is no specific implementation date for this feature, but it is assigned to v3.0.

I need to exclude some networks from DNS filtering. At work, We are not allowed to use different DNS servers. Adguard DNS blocks my internet unless I turn it off at work network. How can I avoid this, or make Adguard DNS disconnect automatically? I use Adguard on iOS and iPadOS and it has this feature. How can I get it on Mac?

fskaeh commented 7 months ago

I'd be very interested in seeing this feature as well, this way I can let my router handle DNS at home, and Adguard while out of the house.

Any updates as of 2024?

Feature Request: Wi-Fi Exceptions for AdGuard for Mac

Issue: AdGuard for iOS allows users to set Wi-Fi exceptions to disable DNS protection on specified networks. This feature is crucial for those who use other DNS filtering methods, like AdGuard Home, on their home network.

Request: Implement the same Wi-Fi exceptions functionality in AdGuard for Mac to provide flexibility and control over DNS filtering based on the network connected.

Current Limitation: Without this feature, AdGuard for Mac users cannot differentiate DNS filtering settings between their home network and other networks, leading to constant DNS filtering.

Community Feedback:

Status Update Request: As of 2024, there has been no specific implementation date provided, although the feature is planned for version 3.0.

User Impact: The lack of Wi-Fi exceptions affects users who need to switch off AdGuard DNS filtering on certain networks, such as work environments where alternative DNS servers are mandated.

Community Interest: The feature has garnered support from multiple users, indicating a strong interest and need within the AdGuard community.

I have AdGuard DNS on my home router, I don't need duplicate DNS on my devices, it would be nice to see this functionality released for Mac and for Android based devices.
