What I did is Clear Portal Cache, on Variants I selected the default theme, go to Basic Settings and modify it then Save. Check on Variants making sure the modified version is the new active theme. There were instances I have to do this twice to make sure all new settings are saved. Did a reboot to verify and it did keep the last saved theme.

Tested today the current upload, no more issues on portal after upgrade then reboot and another reboot.
