Default "atomic" mode #12

There was a comment relating to the default "atomic" mode
of the library.
It is a good question.
Should the default be atomic or non-atomic nibbles?

It can easily be argued either way.

The "safest" and most "reliable" mode is obviously "atomic".

This issue is a reminder to make a final decision as to
what the default state should be.
