NCAR notes that the output variables should not have characters like spaces and () in them.
We should come up with a scheme to name variables, such as (long name, short name):
density_O, O
velocity_east_O, Ve_O
temperature_neutral, Tn
density_Oplus, O+
velocity_east_Oplus, Ve_O+
velocity_north_ions, Ve_i
