Bye the way, don't you think the text beside Nickname, Status and Personal
Message is
trivial? maybe you could clear it to have more space. Or maybe you could change
the
avatar position to left and clear the text, that may be nice.

The widgets are custom widgets paul made, and they play with the information
inside
so we can show emotions inside it. I personally didn't care much for this
feature, as
I dont like seeing emoticons everywhere, but people wanted it.
There is something that causes the artifacts and weirdness. As for your combo
box
being huge, i have no clue why. If you look at the screenshots in our website,
you
can see how it appears on our computers. That one must be something to do with
the
theme. Your text entries are super small, and the combo is huge. That makes no
sense
as we do not size these ourselves.
Let me know what theme you are using and I can test it out on mine.

I'm using Aurora Compact, you can find it in gnome-looks or xfce-looks i think,
but i
believe the combobox remains huge with any theme, maybe because i use small
fonts
that turn the text entries really small?

Check this with Aurora DarkSea, this is what i'm talking about text imput areas:

Just checked using different themes and engines, but the combobox is still
huge, i'll
try with bigger fonts, what font do you use?
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar

Still huge with Sans 10, my regular font is Sans 8
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar

Also huge reseting DPI to default
any idea what could be causing this?
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar
on 20 May 2009 at 5:45
The combo is still the same size because it contains a status image. Thus using
smaller font will not change it's size in contrast to the text entries. The only
solution here would be scaling the image with the text IMHO.
Original comment by Zarevucky.Jiri
on 20 May 2009 at 6:28
No, I was wrong. It's because it scales to fill the space display image took.
So we
need to downscale the display image or rethink the layout.
Original comment by Zarevucky.Jiri

You have the same problem as me Jiri?
What would be the best way to fix this?
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar
on 20 May 2009 at 6:44
I can see it when I set my font size small enough. I guess it's more visible
with
some themes/engines than with other, because it's not very visible until I set
font
size to 6.
There are two possibilities to solve it - either remove display image entirely,
or
check the requested size (of the entry and combo together) and rescale the image
accordingly. The latter is obviously better, but someone will have to code it.
:)

I have text size 8 and it's visible, but i'm using 76 DPI.
Great, i'll wait for someone to code it :)
What do you think Jiri about removing the text beside the enrties and combobox?
And
maybe moving image to left?
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar
on 20 May 2009 at 8:01
I think it can be done, but only if we remove the display name entry. Otherwise
it's
not really obvious for users of other protocols than MSN. As far as I know, it's
there for historical reasons only anyway. Nobody needs to change his name
frequently now.
Or I had this idea that we can create a morphing fields, which would display
text as
a normal label, but when double-clicked, would change to an entry. What do you
think?
As for the image, I don't think it's any different on the left, although some
people
may like it that way.
Original comment by Zarevucky.Jiri
on 20 May 2009 at 9:30
I Don't think i get clearly your idea of a morphing field.
I think with the image on the left side we could save some space an would look
more
appealing.
Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar
on 20 May 2009 at 9:53
Morphing fields is bad GUI design IMO.
Some people are into all kinds of GUI ding-dong bells and whistles. We are
looking to
make the UI simple and easy to use, not super elite morphing widgets.
The amount of use that users actually perform in the profile section can vary
from
user to user. Making it simple to use is top priority, not worrying about every
individual users layout ideas.
If we listened to every single UI change demand we get, we would never finalize
our
look and feel, and everyone would constantly complain. If all users want
something
really badly, we can change it for the greater good. But moving things around
left
and right isn't really what the issues list is used for.
If you have a bug report, or a enhancement request that would help usability,
then we
are totally up for it.
I personally do not that that morphing widgets have ANYTHING whatsoever to do
with
usability. If the widget is displayed as a text box, or as a label, it is not
used
any differently by the user. Having a label that turns into a widget if you
double-click it is assuming that a user would do such a thing. Doubleclicking a
label
is not a normal GUI expectation.
Thats all I will say on the subject.
This issue should stick with the original issue. The problem is that this user's
galaxium window does not look as intended (as per screenshots on the site).
We still need the info about which theme you are using so we can replicate the
problem.
Original comment by dra...@gmail.com
on 21 May 2009 at 4:50
Ok, it was just an idea. If you read the comments, you'd see you don't need the
theme
to replicate it. Just set the font small enough. (And even if you needed, he
already
named the engine TWICE, so read before you nag :-P ) The display image's fixed
size
is what causes the problem.

I'm using Aurora Compact, i attached it, but the problem remains with most
engines
and themes, i've tried clearlooks, murrine, and some more.
Maybe we could fix it like Jiri said, making the avatar autoresize.

Phil, one mor thing to see if i can help you more.
This is related to one of the first issues i posted, about the mirror text on
imput
areas.
Here i attach a screenshot with an emoticon and somte text in the input area
and you
can see clearly taht even the emoticon gets shaded or mirrored.
Any idea how to fix this?

Can't we just replace the custom widget with a TextView? It would also allow
newlines
in personal messages.
Original comment by Zarevucky.Jiri
on 23 May 2009 at 8:33
No, they do not look the same at all. a textentry has a rounded sunk in border
around
it. It has already been explored.
All we have to do is fix the current widget.
Original comment by dra...@gmail.com
on 23 May 2009 at 1:43
Well, that depends on the theme you use. And anyway, why does it need to have
rounded
edges? TextView looks just fine IMO.

Original comment by dra...@gmail.com

So i've fixed the problem with the display image sizing causing the combo boxes
and
spacing between the widgets to be messed up.
I've tested it with small desktop font sizes.
Still need to fix the widgets showing some weird artifacts in the edges,
otherwise
thats about it.
In terms of removing labels and moving display image to the left, i will be
adding
display options for this I think. It will not be a default as its not a user
friendly
design.

Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar

I'm unable to reproduce the problem. Mine shows up fine and doesn't get weird.
The part that is weird is you say its getting bigger and bigger? do you mean
its growing?
What the code is doing is taking the natural height of the widget, and making
the
width the same. It would make no sense for it to be grown out of proportion
like that
and never happens on my computer.
I wonder what is so different about your system setup that this odd behavior
would
occur. Its certainly not the code that is making it so large.

I've changed theme and engine and now it works perfect, if you want i can

Original comment by sebas.sc...@yahoo.com.ar

Just so you know. I've also changed things again. now all the images used in
the app
(other than in lists) will use the notebook border instead of its own. The
sizing
only occurs once when the widget is exposed. you should no longer have the
growing
effect.
I was able to reproduce it so I was able to fix it.
thanks for helping, this should look better and make the images look more
natural in
the interface. we may still need to draw a border inside the widget itself, but
i'm
satisfied with the outside part.
