Several questions/problems with links:
internal references don't work from the .bib files even with the pdf's stored in the _static folder
we can't store all information as pdfs because information "is proprietary" and we ain't tryna get sued
some possible solutions: -- links from the DOI, external but unchanging -- old timey citations with no urls and thus no linkage -- somehow making the links not actually linkable, so the reader needs to copy and paste them to visit them (then travis won;t check that they go anywhere) -- telling travis to ignore the .bib file so it won't check that the links go anywhere and we don't worry about link timeouts
Ok, we can just increase the timeout for htmlproofer in Travis. I can set that up soon. Thanks for looking into this, Clare!

Someone should go through all the various links and update to the new bibtex option as implemented here.
