This past week the team went to the wastewater facility and determined that the pump should be set to 50 rpm to give an 8hr residence time (flow rate of 3.5ml/sec).
Experimental method and calculations:
The pump was set to 20rpm which filled a graduated cylinder to 400ml in 281 seconds, giving a flow rate of 1.42ml/sec.
Calculations to readjust rpm:
3.5ml/sec(desired)/1.42ml/sec(produced)=2.5.
=>20rpm*2.5(ratio)=50rpm
The rpm was readjusted to 50 rpm and tested to confirm accuracy of calculations. 50rpm was found to fill 400ml in 114 seconds, giving a flow rate of 3.51ml/sec. It was concluded that the pump should be set to 50 rpm for an 8hr residence time.
For future reference, 1 rpm pumps roughly 70.2 uL/sec.
