error connecting to transmission-arm v 1.75

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. install transmission 1.75-arm (http://ipkg.nslu2-
linux.org/feeds/optware/ts72xx/cross/unstable/transmission_1.75-1_arm.ipk) 
on NAS 4220 box
2. start transmission-remote-gui on XP-based computer
3. upon connection you receive an error "Invalid character 'n'"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
application cannot connect to transmission daemon at all

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
using arm version 1.75 of transmission daemon with transmission-remote-gui 
v 1.40

This problem appears to have been introduced in transmission 1.74. Not aware of 
any 
immediate fix other than downgrading to 1.73 and lower
