PAID PROMOTIONAL CONTENT: Ask engineer at sponsor company to teach me how to rebase on the command line #24

who to ask:

proposed episode format:

an expert at tower get hops on a code-sharing session / livestream. We create a very messy git repo (like this kind of crazy mess)

image

We go through the exercise one on one and teach people what the value of rebasing is while explaining on a technical level how it works and how to do it yourself manually on the command line.

While going through the process, talk about things like the risks of rebasing, what to do if you squanch all history into a single commit. (hint: update your resume, don't list your current employer, say you were incarcerated on charges of voluntary manslaughter instead ... I dunno ... it doesn't sound as bad).

Maybe have a wider discussion about branching strategies and what ways of using git they've seen that seem really effective and useful.

The paid endorsement part of the video is a minimum of 2 minutes where we go through a way to do the same thing in tower (a one click, gui solution that made my heart SING! <3)

Offer up a link and an affiliate code to the product page so anyone who doesn't want to use the command line could take a moment to sign up for the 30 day trial. Maybe convince their boss that they should buy an enterprise license.

The product seems pretty good!

video format:

Imagine maybe a 2 up zoom call with screen sharing and pair programming. The sponsor developer tells me what steps to take, I execute the commands and ask questions while we work. The intention is to educate and enjoy the process of learning.

Update:

Proposal was (kindly) rejected by tower.

The content itself is still compelling, but would need to be reworked. I still like the instructional pair programming format, but maybe I work with a friend and record the session as me teaching them.

Additionally, perhaps reach out to other git-based businesses to see if anyone else would be willing to sponsor a deep-dive video about re-basing.

I also followed up with the founder/CTO who was kind enough to reply to see if they would be willing to sit for an interview about their early career, decision to found their Gui git product, experiences in growing the business, challenges and learnings in managing a team, and where they see the future going. (Awaiting reply)
