Remove 1 scale from yolo3.cfg #1429

Open Edgar-Alarcon opened 6 years ago

Edgar-Alarcon commented 6 years ago

Hi @AlexeyAB,

After training successfully the yolo3 model for custom objects we have been testing the prediction and we have found out that the biggest scale (anchors 6,7,8 or downsample by 8) is never used. Even the nearest possible view for that object will never return bounding boxes from the biggest scale.

The precision results are pretty good with the default anchors. What we want now is to improve the performance and reduce the computational cost of the prediction.

How could we remove the biggest scale from yolo3.cfg ?

Thank you very much, we do appreciate your work for the community

@Edgar-Alarcon Hi,

It will not significantly improve performance.

But you can try to change these 3 layers: https://github.com/AlexeyAB/darknet/blob/c2a8cc2ad3f4b31243cbf577440ee45bafcc7f92/cfg/yolov3.cfg#L591-L615

to these 3 layers:

Thank you so much @AlexeyAB

We have already trained with that configuration and it works well with a bit more performance than before.

However, we would like to speed up the prediction even more. Tiny-yolo-3 is not very accurate for our case and yolo3 is too computationally expensive.

We need to understand what makes computationally expensive yolo3 and find the perfect tradeoff between accuracy and speed. BTW we work just with one class for detection (I don't know if we could get some boost from this).

What strategies would you suggest us to design our custom network with better performance?

Also you can try to remove these layers and train from the begining:

We have deleted those layers and trained it but we got a prediction without bounding boxes.

Do you know where this error comes from?

I attach you our current cfg
