Cannot use import statement outside a module

When I clone the repository and run npm run dev I get the following error.:

If I set "type": "module" in the package.json or use the .mjs extension it doesn't change the problem either. Now if I just compile everything like this and host it locally as a packet the handler doesn't work either. So if I remove or overwrite the existing dist folder with the current unchanged code then it doesn't work at all. This must mean that the base code is different from the existing dist folder?
