Pi install feedback from KM6RPT #11

From KM6RPT (via Slack) :

The OS X directions for installing ASL3 are really good. Frankly, they are a lot better than Hamvoip. It was a great idea to use the Raspberry pi installer. I went through it with my “idiot glasses” on. If whomever wrote, it would like some minor change suggestions, let me know.

I guess I will just say it.

For one, before writing to the card, it asked asked me to put in my login and password for my mac to get the wifi info.

Second, I wouldn’t switch the names for the computer/hostname. A lot of these people have never used a linux or unix computer before so they don’t understand what ping is, a hostname is or what exactly you are doing. At first you tell them to “Check the box next to Set hostname and enter a hostname for the device to appear as on the network. It is recommended to choose a functional name such as “asl3-node50185” (using your node number) or “CALLSIGN-hotspot” (e.g. “w1aw-hotspot”).

I guess it is OK to give them a choice but this may lead to confusion. The problem is when the set hostname example screen shot you have node12345. I believe this third example may confuse some people. Then in the ping example, you have ping -4 node460181.local. Then you have https://nodennnnnn.local/ - It was a great idea to give an actual example like https://node460181.local/. I personally hate when man pages in unix don’t give you an actual example. - I personally would just stick to one naming convention and use that in all the examples and screen shots.

Like I said, so far, it is an excellent instruction manual.

Yes, neither Allmon3 nor Copilot (port 9090) are the best place to start. For someone who knows AllStar starting with ssh is a great option. However, for many AllStar users ssh is confusing.

Lot's of folks like Copilot. It's definitely a useful tool for folks not comfortable with Linux. But I don't think it's the best place to start. I was thinking out loud when I mentioned Copilot on Slack.

On second thought a good looking landing page welcoming users to ASL3 with links and/or directions for SSH, Copilot, the ASL Menu and the ASL3 Manual would be really great.

@jxmx @allan others, Your thoughts?

Do you mean making a root landing page on the local Web server that points to everything?

Yes and I'll close this as duplicate of https://github.com/AllStarLink/asl3-pi-appliance/issues/2
