alternate mode: "using nether spawn anchor from nether update, each team has limited spawns. you can provide as loot in harder chunks a few "charges" for the spawner. game now becomes first to destroy enemy spawn or exhaust their # respawns"

Could do this a lives pool for the entire team, or a number of lives per player.

Both ideas worth exploring.

The nether spawn anchor solution would be much simpler than what I would have to create.

There is no "death detection" really. We can maybe hook into the actual minecraft-death-count but for statistics sake we do not want to "mess" with that but we could run double stats and compare them.... oh and do not forget to reset those stats on beginning of game because people could have died in the puzzle or an earlier game ^^
