I believe we could hit two birds with one stone. One being this issue, the other being that the game currently does not warn ops when the arena they will play soon is not yet reset.

[proposed] when a game starts, we place a marker in the map, that keeps track of players who were in the map during the game instance
[implemented] when we erase an arena, we remove all entities, and paste fresh chunks
[proposed] when a player joins, we check if they are known by the game marker. if they are, they can continue playing, if they arenot, we force them to spectator mode

Alternatively, ignoring the resetting of the arenas, we can use a scoreboard variable like game_id and if a player joins with the wrong game_id they are forced to spectator
