Hello everyone I have pinged and to everyone else who randomly finds this GitHub issue. As a part of our discussions, prototype work, and planning in working on v5: (https://github.com/AllenCellModeling/aicsimageio/discussions/372), we think if any time was a good time to change the name of the library from aicsimageio to something else, now would be the time.
There are three main reasons for this:
The current name is very easy to mess up when saying it out-loud, with variations of "A I C S Image IO" or "aches image io".
There have been contributions to and adoption of the library from people outside of AICS for a while (which is great!) but the name seems very internally focused.
Similar to 2, by changing the name to something more general, we may further increase awareness, adoption, and contribution.
In the process of renaming the library we would likely follow the sklearn route and have aicsimageio v5 have a single dependency on whatever library we rename to; much like how when a user installs pip install sklearn, pip simply installs scikit-learn, when users would install with pip install aicsimageio, pip would install our-yet-to-be-determined-name.
To vote, drag the options in the order of your preference. Top of the list is most preferred option; bottom of the list is least preferred option. Each option is in the format: {library name / import name} :: {name meaning} :: {name pronunciation}.
