Ignore .ipynb_checkpoints --> students should not want to commit this with their work
Ignore text tables --> I'm not sure why they're saved? Anyway, I don't see these side effects as relevant when committing answers to exercises.

(I assume you also suggest to students that they should add individual files to the repo, not everything that's modified.)

Since you asked, the notebooks save the figures and tables so I can include them in the book.
