Additional context

• During the wrong situation, linux-wallpaperengine is started via a systemd service, which is started from my .xinitrc automatically at boot/login
• wallpaper-engine.service.txt
• Some wallpapers work just fine, only specific ones get stuck like this
• Starting the exact same wallpaper from a terminal works just fine (the "right" scenario shown above)

For 1219542433, moving the systemctl --user restart wallpaper-engine line to my i3 config in ~/.config/i3/config (and adding exec_always to the beginning of the line to keep i3 happy) instead of in my .xinitrc fixed the issue. Not sure if X11 just takes a little bit of time to initialize or what.. I'm assuming this works for the rest of them, but I'll do further testing to confirm.
