I am also having trouble with this, I have tried using both the deb package and building from source and I get the same thing. I have tried running the program with --debug but it doesn't give me any more information. I never had an issue running emulationstation on the pi. Where can I look or what can I do to provide better info to help out with this problem?

Alrighty so I I'm here feeling a little bit silly, but after installing debian on another computer and building emulation station there, I ran into the same problem. What I didn't say in my initial post was that I was trying to run emulation station from the terminal without a desktop environment. At this point, I'm not really sure if running ES from the command line without a DE is possible or is even supposed to be possible, but after installing LXDE out of frustration and trying emulationstation there, it actually runs fine.

So I suppose my question now is - is it possible to run ES outside of the desktop environment like I was trying to before? Or is that simply not realistic. Previously before I started what I am working on right now, I did play with retropi for a while and I'm pretty certain that it was possible to launch ES from the terminal without a DE going - or even through SSH for that matter, but maybe I was misunderstanding something. Anyone mind helping a linux noob out?
