I'm going to go ahead and close this issue then. The fix has been added to RetroPie (to the repo at least, not sure about the latest image).
I can confirm this is not in the latest image (RetroPieImage_ver1.9.iso).. I am a newer user of RetroPie / Raspberry Pi.. I have had 4+ long gaming sessions lock up.. before I found this page. Going to try @alexbleks fix, reboot & leave it running on a game overnight. Will report back.
I will have a look into this issue during this evening as well.
Initial report looked good after running his fix.. ran an NES ROM all night, quit it this morning.. and emulationstation popped right up (as it should). Ran another NES ROM before I left... looks like the fix still works fine.. just needs to be added to the image I think.
Image ver 1.9.1 is uploaded - this has the fix included.
Wonderful, thanks.
I am still having similar (though not identical) issues exiting Retroarch using the most recent image (ver 1.9.1). I do not get the black screen of death with a white dot on it, but instead get something like the following image:
Also, I don't have to be playing for a specified amount of time for this error to happen. I can play for 1 minute or 2 hours, and it will happen regardless. The save files are intact, and I am still able to ssh into the device when this screen appears. Also, when I manipulate my controller, I can hear the emulationstation sounds effects in the background. I can even select new games - I just can't see which games I am selecting.
SO, I've been reading through these forums and have found the following:
I have the most recent firmware, I'm overclocking at 800MHz, I have a model B pi, and the memory split is 256/256. I'll play with it some more, but I am starting to get stumped! I'll try to find another power supply in case that's the issue, but I don't think it is. I'll keep exploring, but if anybody has any suggestions, let me know!
Yo! Well, just to answer myself, I ended up putting these lines:
hdmi_group=1 hdmi_mode=1 overscan_scale=1
in /boot/config
and that magically seemed to fix it.. I'm not sure which line was responsible though, so I might do a little more experimentation, but yea!
This thing seems pretty PI-specific: I'm using EmulationStation on a regular PC running Ubuntu and I've NEVER seen this problem there... :/
Hello,
I got two problems, the first is being that i can't control the menu with my gamepad. sometimes when i try with my keyboard it controls at first then freezes and stops working
second is that when i went and looked in es_log.txt i found an Error - font size exceeded texture size! if you were doing something reasonable, tell aloshi to fix it!
I'm very new to this kind of things, i looked up in the past threads and can't seem to get a hold on that and do the things either with the sleep command for the gamepad or editing the font for the error.
Thanks a lot for your patience and help !!!
