Utdanningsdirektoratet also want this, however, we want more languages than ISO 639-2 supports, for instance Afghan Persian, Dari (language code prs
in ISO 639-3).
Relevant recommendation https://www.digdir.no/standarder/bruk-av-sprakkodar-pa-offentlege-nettsider/1673. Interesting to see that the recommendation actually is to use all three. Start with ISO-639.1 (two letters), if that doesn't cover what you need then look to ISO-639.2 for those countries and again move on to ISO-639.3 if you still aren't covered. A bit unsure why this is though.
In UDIR PBU, we need to differentiate between the sami languages. Could we look up the standard based on how many letters we send in? The fallback is 2 letters as it is today, but we will use ISO-639-3 if it is three letters?
@framitdavid As a part of reviewing nb.json this summer, the question of a correct ISO for the name of world languages came up. I contacted Standard Norge, SNL and Språkrådet, and they have work going on, to define a standard for this. They do not know when it will be ready, but will keep us informed:

Hei, Ivo!
Beste hilsen
Pål
Should use ISO-639-2 to support all needed languages for our app.
