In HTML, the title of a referneced work should be put in a cite element.
In stml68, mixed-citation elements have the first italic child containing the title. It seems consistent in newer journal articles as well (but not older JAMS articles).
If it is consistent, then it might make sense to add a template converting the first italic child of mixed-citations to cite (rather than i).
