Need Solution for Offline Viewing of Descriptions #240

I put an issue in the wh2o repository https://github.com/AmericanWhitewater/wh2o/issues/2295 but @AWKevin suggested I put a note here too.

The inability to access our data in when offline inhibits functionality while traveling in areas with no coverage (e.g. a good part of Idaho). Other resources for mountain biking (e.g. https://www.trailforks.com/help/view/77/, hiking, climbing, and backcountry skiing all have offline mode and the ability to cache descriptions/maps; people notice that we don't have this option.

Even if we can't make all the photos available for offline viewing it would be good to have at least the descriptions, rapids, last reported flow (before coverage was lost with date and time and not "as of a minute ago"). If possible a basic map would be good too.

This was my specific suggestion for the app:

When setting up region filters in app provide an option to download, update, and cache content for offline viewing.

Just to clarify, the current functionality is as follows:

Looks right. I could not even get the app to open when offline earlier in the summer but now that is working and it appears reach search results are indeed cached. You are correct that reach details and map are not cached. I regularly use the narrative description and map in Trailforks (mountain biking app) offline to find the trailhead. It would be handy to have similar functionality for our app when roaming the back roads of Idaho.

@yeahphil Is working on a solution for this. No timeline, but the tech looks pretty cool!

@Gregliest: any additional thoughts on this? I received this inquiry today from one of our members:

From: Cynthia Taylor cynergizer@gmail.com Subject: Need gps coordinates for rapids Date: August 26, 2022 at 1:07:54 PM PDT To: webmaster@americanwhitewater.org

Hi, I'm a long time member of AW. I'm going on a SF salmon trip, and I need to download rapid coordinates. I don't see a way to do this from your site or app. Could you please add this feature to your app or at the very least, allow a way to copy gps coordinates so i can enter into gaia (which supports gps enabled mapping offline)? Most of the runs I do don't have any cell service.
Thanks for your consideration, Cyn Taylor 206.850.6216

@yeahphil What's your capacity looking like these days?

Unfortunately pretty much zero right now. (iOS 16 drops in about 10 days)On Aug 29, 2022, at 4:15 PM, Greg Lee @.***> wrote: @yeahphil What's your capacity looking like these days?
