Also to accumulate precip over the right days within the growing season, and to require that the planting was done during the planting month.

How to minimize variables to include? Maybe only one variables per crop per year, with additional pseudo crops for permissable double cropping patterns (which might locally reduce to single-planting if dates overlap).
