I don't believe this is correct. I have been processing images with white text
on black and actually getting slightly better results.

The documentation for Tesseract is unfortunately sparse, if it even exists at
all, but the papers about Tesseract mention that this was one of the original
design considerations, and you can safely assume that if Tesseract fails with
white on black, manually inversing it will make no difference in the
recognition.
If you want to open a new issue, I suggest that you either include the image in
the issue report, or a link to it; supplying your own diagnosis in lieu of real
information is not helpful.
