[HOLD, DO NOT WORK ON YET, FILED PREMATURELY]

Replace placeholder Informed Consent (currently, Who's got Rhythm?) with below text. This has been slightly modified for our experiment. I have included both a basic HTML text AND and my best attempt to download the version used on the AML website.

You will be taking part in an experiment as part of the "Unravelling our capacity for music" project conducted by Jiaxin Li in collaboration with David John Baker, John Ashley Burgoyne and Henkjan Honing and at the University of Amsterdam, Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC), Music Cognition Group (MCG).

Purpose of the Research Project

As music cognition researchers, we are interested to know what the core cognitive components of musicality are. The purpose of this research project is to better understand what people are listening to when they are listening to music by applying a listening game, more specifically, to investigate whether pitch is dispensable in music memory.

Who Can Take Part in This Research?

Anybody aged 16 or older with sufficient good hearing, natural or corrected is welcome to participate in this experiment. Your device (computer, tablet or smartphone) must be able to play audio and stream short audio files online. You should adjust the volume of your device so that it is comfortable for you.

Instructions

After answering the demographic questions, you will be presented a set of cards on the screen. By clicking any cards, you will hear music and start the game. Your task is to try to find all the pairs of music. Each board is composed by either pairs of identical music or pairs where one of the cards is distorted. Click two cards to listen and make the match, then click anywhere to continue. Correctly matching all the pairs will clear the board and complete the game. Try to clear the board with as fewer clicks as possible. You will then be given the score. Each game will take a few minutes and you are welcome to play the game as many times as you like.

Voluntary Participation and Risks

You will be participating in this research on a voluntary basis. This means you are free to stop taking part at any stage without consequences or penalty. If you decide to stop, all the information gathered up until then will be permanently deleted. This research has no known risks.

Discomfort, Risks, and Insurance

For all research at the University of Amsterdam, a standard liability insurance applies. You will not receive any financial compensation for playing this game. We do not anticipate any discomfort you might experience by playing this game.

Privacy

The information gathered will be used for publication in scientific journals only. Fully anonymized data may be available online in tandem with these scientific publications. We guarantee that you will remain anonymous under all circumstances. Your personal information will not be viewed by third parties without your express permission.

Further Information

For further information, please contact Jiaxin Li; email: jx.li@uva.nl; Science Park 900, 1098 XH Amsterdam. If you have any complaints regarding this project, you can contact the Secretary of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (commissie-ethiek-fgw@uva.nl).

Informed Consent

I have been clearly informed about the research project and I consent to participate in this research. I retain the right to revoke this consent without having to provide any reasons for my decision. I am aware that I am entitled to discontinue the research at any time and can withdraw my participation.

You will be taking part in an experiment as part of the "Unravelling our capacity for music" project conducted by Jiaxin Li in collaboration with David John Baker, John Ashley Burgoyne, and Henkjan Honing from the Music Cognition Group (MCG) at the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation (ILLC) at the University of Amsterdam.

Purpose of the Research Project

As music cognition researchers, we are interested in the core cognitive components of musicality. The purpose of this project is to better understand what people are listening to when they are listening to music. Specifically, we want to know to what extent pitch plays a role in people’s ability to remember familiar music. To do this, we have designed a music game that will allow us to answer questions about musical memory.

Who Can Take Part?

Anybody aged 16 or older with sufficient good hearing, natural or corrected, is welcome to participate. Your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) must be able to play audio and stream short audio files online. You should adjust the volume of your device so that it is comfortable for you.

Instructions

After answering some questions about your background, you will be presented with the game. You will see a set of cards on the screen. On each turn, you can click two cards to listen to the music. Your task is to find all the matching music pairs. Each board either has pairs of identical music or pairs where one of the cards is distorted. If you find a match, you will be awarded points and that pair of cards will be removed from the game. Try to earn more points by clearing the board in fewer turns. Each game will take a few minutes. You are welcome to play the game as many times as you like.

Voluntary Participation and Risks

Participating in this research is entirely voluntary. This means you are free to stop taking part in the experiment at any stage without consequences or penalty. Any data collected from this experiment will be stored in a way that it is not possible to personally identify unique individuals. We do not anticipate you will experience any risks or discomfort from participating in our experiment.

Privacy

The information gathered during this study will only be used for academic research. This includes but is not limited to the publication of findings in academic journals and sharing of results at conferences. We may publish data collected during this study for other researchers in an anonymized format. Any personal information will not be shared with third parties without first obtaining explicit consent.

Further Information

For further information, please contact Jiaxin Li (jx.li@uva.nl), Lab42, Science Park 900, 1098 XH Amsterdam. If you have any complaints regarding this project, you can contact the Secretary of the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam (commissie-ethiek-fgw@uva.nl).

Informed Consent

I have been clearly informed about the research project and voluntarily consent to participate in this research. I retain the right to revoke this consent without having to provide any reasons for my decision. I am aware that I am entitled to withdraw my participation in this research at any time.

Okay to add now, @Lia-JX-Li and @davidjohnbaker1 , or should I still wait?

Okay to add now, @Lia-JX-Li and @davidjohnbaker1 , or should I still wait? This is the right version Berit. Please use this one with “I consent and continue” or “ I do not consent” checkbox”! :D

BeritJanssen commented 1 year ago

The consent form usually has two buttons underneath, "I agree" and "Stop", not checkboxes.

Lia-JX-Li commented 1 year ago

Oh of course! I was just not sure how it was so please just go with what we normally use there! On 26. Jun 2023, at 13:37, Berit @.***> wrote: The consent form usually has two buttons underneath, "I agree" and "Stop", not checkboxes.
