RSS feed shows NO unread emails. the new gmail also brings all unread emails to
the top of the list and shows NO unread emails, so this must be an issue within
your app.

I'm sorry but that's impossible.
I'm parsing this feed (https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/unread) so if
it's empty - my app won't show unread emails too.
It might however happen that this feed shows "<fullcount>0</fullcount>" ("0"
unread emails) so that any feed reader will show 0 unread, but later in the xml
it will still show some "unread" (and archieved) emails.
This is a confirmed and known behaviour and it's not a bug but an intended
functionality.
It was also reported in:

If you have any browser addons installed, try to paste this into your
addressbar (works for chrome/firefox):
view-source:https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/unread
