We really need marketing / social media guy #1923

Open tuomas2 opened 3 years ago

tuomas2 commented 3 years ago

Someone who has experience and/or great touch to marketing and social media. I would like to hand over maintaining social media channels (facebook, etc) to someone who has interest and skills.

I believe that what we lack is proper marketing. We have brilliant tool with great tutorials but nobody is promoting us actively.

At the moment we don't have money for this (nor anything else), but once we have association, we could perhaps use some money in online advertising too.

Please add to your prayer list if you can't help yourself :-)

I try not to use Facebook 😊

Our YouTube view has gone up 4000% (I think that is what I saw) since the last release. Subscriber count is still low though.

That seems like a good area to focus. And then just posting a link to a video on FB could be sufficient.

What should our next video be?

I know everyone tries to "not to use Facebook" (etc), but we need someone that is willing to do social media for us, even on those platforms that he does not personally use. I would like to see us in Instagram, Tiktok etc, even though I have zero interest to be on those platforms. But those are the platforms that many people use these days (as far as I have understood).

tuomas2 commented 3 years ago

Youtube has grown in views and also in subscriptions remarkably since release. It is easy platform in that sence for us that we advertise it from app, and people have natural motivation to watch our videos. I agree that new content on fb is good. But we need to be active on other platforms too. Just copy/pasting youtube link to facebook does not feel enough (need to write "postings" about those videos, and be ready to reply comments etc).

thebiblelover7 commented 2 years ago

Couldn't this be automated so that whenever you publish to youtube it will automatically publish to Insta, Mastodon, peertube or whatever? This would make it a lot easier, I think.

Once upon a time I was using some "social media hub" service to another project of mine (I don't remember the name of the service now), that was posting same stuff to several social media sites using their integrations. Something probably can be done, yes.

agrogers commented 2 years ago

It’s creating the content that is the main hurdle I think. I would like to help there but I am terrible at social media.

I would love to work on this more. This is a project that I really love and cherish and would really like to find a way to support it as much as I can.

I do like making videos and graphics. (e.g. https://pixel.tchncs.de/p/thebiblelover7/349413466911101259) So please let me know if I can help in any way possible.

P.S.: Thanks @tuomas2 and @agrogers for all you do for this project. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for your interest Adriel. I was thinking that perhaps we could set to work on writing a manual and then simply take a small section of the manual and convert it to a social media post. For example, a manual page on Workspaces would have an intro about what a workspace is. We could use that intro in a social media post like "Did you know that our app has workspaces? Workspaces are....." and quote the manual. That would kill two birds.

@agrogers Great idea Andrew! Yes, we should definitely write a manual so that it is easier to understand what is happening in the app. I think we could use readthedocs.org for the manual. What do you think? It seems like it also will allow us to manage who can edit the manual while still allowing outside contributions since it depends on the github repo.

tuomas2 commented 2 years ago

We already set it up, but nothing has been done since then

Yes, read the docs is a good choice. I will try to do some over my Christmas holidays. I find writing documentation a little disheartening because so few people usually read it. But using it also for general promotion means at least some part of it is seen by the masses which makes it feel more worth the effort 😏

It might be good idea also have an official And Bible blog, and write easily shareable blog posts from advertising point of view (could be partly copy-pasted from documentation, if there is some).

But yes, this is a lot of work in itself, and disheartening as (at first) not many people necessarily read it. But it has potential in the long run to be very influential way of promotion (people find articles via Google and can share via SM platforms).

thebiblelover7 commented 2 years ago

perfect, will check out the repo and work something out with @agrogers.

Mind if I drop you an email @agrogers ? will send from my <last name><first name><at>outlook.com email.

OK, i have had a little time today to look at the Read the Docs. It is working nicely now and new builds are done immediately i upload a new file. I have added all the stuff I had done for the video tutorials. Not much of that could be easily converted to a social media post though i dont think. However I think I could make smaller videos / help sections that would work better in both doc and post form.

thebiblelover7 commented 2 years ago

@agrogers Perfect, looks like it can actually be useful. Will work on some things for the manual if you don't mind.

I finally tried to make a gif to demonstate something. I think it is heading in the right direction. It's only 174k (600px high) which I think it possibly acceptable.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi, guys. I'm new to this project. Is the plan to move the Wiki docs to readthedocs or to maintain both and try to differentiate them?

On that note, I noticed the https://andbible.github.io/ site looks very approachable, in my opinion--if I weren't a developer, I would strongly prefer using a tab in that site over both readthedocs and a GitHub Wiki/FAQ. So, it could be that the github.io site just hosts everything you want non-developer users to see, with GitHub Wiki or readthedocs being kept for contributor guides if those aren't also moved to a page or subdomain on the github.io site. That way, typical users don't have to visit GitHub unless they want to (GitHub can have kind of an intimidating developers-only vibe), and, as a bonus, social media links lead people to the main site rather than docs, which is nice because the website has content better suited for folks exploring the app for the first time.

If we could integrate GH-wiki and readthedocs somehow to andbible.github.io in an automated way, that would be great. Perhaps with GH actions it is possible.

From developer perspective, I like GH wiki as it is easy to edit for me. That's where I make my edits normally. Andrew and Ben have been on top of user documentation project (readthedocs).

agrogers commented 2 years ago

ReadTheDocs is good for docs - has all the nice linking and TOC stuff.

Yes, or more specifically Sphinx Documentation Generator that can be used to generate same nice documentation structure anywhere, even in https://andbible.github.io if one wants to do that way. Setting up readthedocs is the simplest approach.

Cool, I didn't know Sphinx could publish to a GitHub Pages site. Opened a new Issue in the site repo for linking the readthedocs to it.

agrogers commented 2 years ago

Ah, yes, that is correct.
