When a word is revealed, should we require a swipe (mouse drag on desktop) from left to right (reading direction) beneath the word? Once the swipe initiated, the word will be read aloud again and only then we progress to the next image. This would first develop print awareness and second reinforce the connection between image and word because the same word is spoken for each of them. If you agree, should we create a new issue for this?

I like the idea of print awareness. For this first story, I suggest that we display the word once the image is tapped on. Add the feature you're talking about in another story: " As Dorel I can see the first letter of the word in another colour and when I tap on it the next letter receives the colour...(and so on)" - it will be like the same exercise as in the first (for the lack of a better idea, but not necessarily) but building a new skill,feature. What do you think?
