You can have objects stretch to fill remaining space when an object from a horizontal stack is deleted and the stack width is set.
But it no longer stretches to fill space objects when they're nested and you turn a nested symbol off.
I have collapsing off in the screenshot below as I want to maintain overall width and its left with a hole where I want to remove the element.
Perhaps in addition to the collapsible option there could be a stretch to fill option.
