I think you did a very good job with your first mini ex. I'm impressed you managed to make those var functions work. I like how it moves in a specific pattern as well. I was staring at it until it filled the screen, so your description of it being a program you stare at for a long time was definitely true for me.
To improve it, i think it would be cool if either:
A) The speed of the ball would be affected by mic input.
B) The colour of the ball would be affected by mic input instead of being random(even though the random colour works well for the psychedelic look you wanted) - for example on a scale from green to red, kind of like the ears kindergardens use for noise control.
